Alexander Balus has been rather overshadowed by its two siblings, Joshua and Judas Maccabaeus, but it, too, is full of drama and fine music. King Ptolemee has his eyes on Syria, the kingdom of his son-in-law, Alexander, son of Antiochus. He schemes to replace Alexander with Demetrius – not just as king, but as husband to his daughter Cleopatra. War ensues, but Alexander has Jonathan Maccabaeus on his side; although Alexander himself is killed, Ptolemee also dies, and Jonathan
emerges victorious. As usual, the best music goes to a woman, Cleopatra: in an aria about a lyre, she is accompanied by pizzicato strings, harp and mandolin; she is abducted mid-aria in the following act, and her sequence at the end of the oratorio is deeply moving.

This is a welcome airing of an unsung oratorio.

Running time: 7-10pm including one Interval.
