Handel wrote the oratorio Joseph and his Brethren in 1743 to a libretto by James Miller, based on the
familiar biblical story in Genesis which tells of Joseph’s elevation in the court of the Pharoah, the love
between him and Asenath, daughter of the High Priest and his eventual reconciliation with his
brothers. It is rarely performed and has been unjustly neglected, especially considering that it was so popular in Handel’s day.

Audiences will not be disappointed with the usual heady mixture of lively and grand choruses, moving
arias and high drama. The cast includes internationally acclaimed singers Elizabeth Watts “One of
the most beautiful voices Britain has produced in a generation – International Record Review” and
Christopher Ainslie “darker toned yet fabulously agile…quite simply, breathtaking – The Guardian”
alongside William Wallace, winner of the 2016 Handel Singing Competition and George Vyvyan, a
chorister at Westminster Abbey.

This performance is supported by Mark Windisch and his friends.
