There is no doubt that George Frideric Handel was one of the greatest musical and cultural forces of nature the world has ever known. Our 2023 London Handel Festival is a jam-packed three-and-a-half week celebration of Handel’s boundary-pushing spirit and continued impact on today’s world. Each one of our events has been crafted to offer unique, Handel-inspired experiences, presenting varied and exciting ways of engaging with this remarkable figure.
Forces of Nature 2023 promises to be one of our most exciting Festivals to date. Throughout the Festival we welcome some of the finest Handelian performers and artists and we are thrilled to present a programme of concerts that has something for everyone. Whether you are new to Handel’s music or have been coming to the Festival for years, we guarantee that there will be something new for you to discover.
We are particularly thrilled to be launching our Handel Opera Studio with our brand new production In the Realms of Sorrow, a radical new staging of four of Handel’s most profound and exquisite Cantatas. Reuniting award-winning director Adele Thomas with our amazing Musical Director Laurence Cummings, In the Realms of Sorrow brings together an exciting ensemble of hand-picked brilliant young players and one of the best Handel casts you will see on stage in London this year. This new Handel Opera Studio production promises to open the mind and cast new light on some of Handel’s most profound dramatic works.
Our popular lunchtime series ‘Lunchtime in the City’ returns with four wonderful recitals. We are delighted to welcome back Festival favourite Christian Curnyn and his Early Opera Company to close the Festival with a special concert performance of Scipione and across the three-and-a-half weeks there is an exciting number of LHF debuts, including a special collaboration with inspirational violinist Bjarte Eike and Royal Academy of Music Baroque.
We are also delighted to present a number of ways for you to get involved and experience the Festival differently. Across the Festival period there are many opportunities for our audiences to take part in talks, walks and our much-loved Come and Sing, as well as our very first LHF Supper Club.
2023 will also see the launch of LHF Inspire!, our brand new learning and participation programme. This important new initiative will ensure Handel’s music and his spirit continues to have an impact on communities and audiences beyond the Festival.
All of us at the London Handel Festival believe that Handel’s music has the ability to capture the human spirit and conjure emotions more than any other composer. Join us across the 2023 Festival to experience some of his magic and power.
