Closing Concert: Floridante HWV 14
Handel opera specialists The Early Opera Company, along with their conductor Christian Curnyn and a cast of acclaimed Handel singers, close the 2025 Festival with a rare concert performance of one of Handel’s hidden operatic gems.
First performed at the King’s Theatre, Haymarket in 1721, Floridante was one of Handel’s most successful operas, so much so that it was revived for many seasons following its premiere. This three-act opera seria recounts the dynastic struggles of Floridante, the Prince of Thrace in the mythical ancient Persia, intertwined with tales of love. Floridante is famed for including some of Handel’s most beautiful and serene arias.
