Lunchtime at The Charterhouse – Garden Folk: The Vauxhall Band
Programme includes works by: Thomas Arne, William Marshall, Turlough O’Carolan, James Oswald and G.F. Handel.
This lunchtime concert explores the influence of folk music on society music, song and dance in the pleasure gardens of 18th-century London.
The title ‘Garden Folk’ has several meanings and connections. The programme will include trio sonatas by Handel, Thomas Arne and William Boyce (resident composers at Vauxhall Gardens), along with some of their popular arias, often inspired by folk tunes, some adapted for the flute and a chamber ensemble by 18th-century publishing impresario John Walsh.
