Lunchtime at The Charterhouse: 2 Battles & a Lament
So much of the harpsichord repertoire was based around movements of the dance suite or the improvisatory Toccata or Prelude that “programmatic” music feels exceptional. However, there are many examples of character studies (for example, in the music of François Couperin) and even narrative-representations throughout the history of harpsichord writing. This programme aims to highlight some of the most memorable examples – from the cautiously positive Lament for the Ferdinand IVth, which ends with the soul being lifted to heaven, via a spurious musical blacksmith, through the Biblical conflict between David and Goliath to canon-fire at the Bastille!
