“Populous Cites Please Me Then”: A talk with Jonathan Keates

Join us for an illuminating talk titled “Populous Cities Please Me Then,” where distinguished author and biographer Jonathan Keates will explore Handel’s London and his experiences in Mayfair during the 1720s, coinciding with the consecration of St George’s Church.

Keates, born in Paris in 1946, has authored several acclaimed biographies and travel books, including works on composers Handel and Purcell. His collection of short stories, “Allegro Postillions,” won both the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Hawthornden Prize. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, Keates taught English at the City of London School from 1974 to 2013. His deep understanding of historical and cultural contexts promises a captivating insight into the vibrant life of 18th-century London.
