Berenice HWV 38

Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House

Sparks fly backstage in this new production of Handel’s Berenice, set in period style. The opera, sung in a new English translation, pits two strong women against princes in a battle of love and politics. In this staging, the rehearsal room for a performance of the opera becomes a parallel scene for the rivalries of two star sopranos of Handel’s day. Berenice was written for the Covent Garden Theatre and it returns to the site for the first time since its premiere in 1737.
