Early Opera Company present “Scipione” HWV 20
“ Find anything exciting happening in period opera in the UK and Curnyn will be involved, whether it’s conducting at the Wanamaker or ENO, recording Handel or directing his own projects.” The Spectator
London Handel Festival favourites and leading Baroque ensemble, the Early Opera Company close the 2023 Festival with a concert performance of Handel’s rarely performed opera Scipione a new edition by Peter Jones.
Scipione received its premiere at the King’s Theatre in 1726. Performed over three acts, this magical opera is set in 210 BC and recounts the life and tales of the great Roman General, Scipio Africanus.
Acclaimed conductor Christian Curnyn leads an all-star cast which features soprano Mhairi Lawson and 2020 International Handel Singing Competition audience prize winner Jessica Cale.
This performance promises to delight all who come to see it and will be sure to close the 2023 Festival in style.
